Texas Gov. Rick Perry says it’ll be up to God if his White House bid ends after the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday.
“That’s God’s will,” Perry told Ken Herman of the Austin American-Statesman when asked if there was any outcome on Tuesday that would cause him to end his presidential bid. “There might be an outcome that He decides that I wouldn’t go on.”
Perry, who upended the GOP presidential race when he joined the field in August, has been trailing in public opinion polls here in Iowa and nationally. He’s now running fourth in the field in Iowa, more than 10 percentage points behind leader Ron Paul, according to the recent surveys compiled by RealClearPolitics.
Perry has openly talked about his faith in the campaign. Herman, a columnist and Texas press corps veteran who’s covered Perry for years, also asked if God was going to take part in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses.
“Pretty sure He will be,” Perry said.
Perry’s quotes today are getting wide play in National Journal, ABC News and other media outlets.
