Competing to Become Number One

Small businesses are the fabric of our society. They help build our communities by providing useful services to our citizens, and even help nonprofit organizations by sponsoring them or donating food, clothing, and money to causes.

As a small business owner, you are in the interesting position of trying to help people by doing what you love, all while attempting to make enough money to stay afloat—and eventually, rake in some serious dough. This is a task that is much more difficult than it sounds.

When you get down to it, if you want your business to thrive, you have got to convince potential customers that the service or good that you provide is vital to their existence. You also have to prove to them that you are the very best at doing whatever it is that you do. If you want your business to succeed, you have to defeat your competition—you have got to be number one. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Best Checking Account option available to you as a small business owner. This step may seem like small potatoes, but when you open a business account people will find out. Once the word goes around that you are playing with the big boys, people will take you seriously. Soon, all of those “people” will become customers. Additionally, by holding a business account with a bank, you will be more likely to receive a loan when you need one, and take advantage of some small business account benefits.
  2. Once you have the very best checking account, you need to know your business. What do you do? Can you describe what you do to a t? In order to beat your competition, you need to know everything there is to know about your field. Prove your expertise to your clients, and they will recommend your company to their friends and family members—that means more customers for you, and not your competitor.
  3. The best way to defeat your opponents—whether they are in business or other areas of your life—is to be better than them. That means that you have got to be committed to your work. Do what you do with immense passion. That means providing customers with personalized service that shows them that you care about them. People like it when they are treated with respect—so that’s what you need to do. Do right by your customers, and they will keep coming back.
  4. It’s one thing to advertise your company’s services, but you will be far more likely to become number one if you are able to illustrate to your potential clients what your company’s vision is. Every aspect of your business, from your employees to the service itself should reflect your values. When people see that you are personally vested in your business they are more likely to call you when they need something done, not your competition.
  5. Finally, if you really want to beat everybody else, you are going to need to get your name out there. Talk to people, and when you do, learn their names. That leaves an impression—it shows that you care enough to remember a person. If you cared enough to do that, people will trust that you will care enough to do your job the right way.

Becoming number one is no easy task. It will require long hours of hard work, consideration, and passion. But when you keep at it, one day it is going to pay off.
